Ivan Henderson is today demanding that the MP for Harwich, Douglas Carswell, attends parliament on Friday to vote against the ‘Employment Opportunities’ Bill.
This Private Members Bill, put forward by Conservative MP, Christopher Chope, would allow employers to opt out of paying the National Minimum Wage and has the support of a number of Conservative MPs.
Ivan Henderson says
“I was proud to be the local MP when Labour introduced this country’s first ever National Minimum Wage and I am horrified at this attempt by the Tories to scrap it. Douglas Carswell should be present to vote against this bill.”
It is ten years since the introduction of the National Minimum Wage and it was strongly opposed by the Conservatives at the time. Ivan now believes that this Private Members Bill signals the direction that a future Conservative government wouldtake and considers it vital that David Cameron is shown by his own backbenchers that they will not stand for it.
“Conservative back benchers such as Mr Carswell must show their opposition to this Bill so that David Cameron gets the message loud and clear,” continued Ivan Henderson. “Any Tory MP who doesn’t oppose this Bill is saying to their leader that they are happy for him to scrap the minimum wage.”
